On February 6th 2012 it was with great surprise that we found in our inbox an email from Alexandra Rotary in Vicotria, Australia informing us that our Rotaract Club had been the Toast of their Meeting….
….we had been “discovered” as a result of our previous two day online facebook event held in conjuction with PASYKAF on the occasion of the World Cancer Day.
I quote their email below.
“6th February 2012
To the President
Rotaract Club of Nicosia, Cyprus
Pres. Glafkos Mitsidis
Our Club has an established custom of toasting a Rotary Club from another country at our weekly meetings. This broadens our knowledge of clubs around the world. We had the pleasure of toasting your Club at our meeting. We wish your Club every success in your Rotary endeavours. We’d love to hear from your club.
Reason for Toast: February 4 was World Cancer Day which we recognised last week.
Tonight we toast a small, but very active Rotaract Club which was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nicosia.
In conjunction with the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends, the Rotaract Club of Nicosia hosted a two day online facebook event, inviting people to spread the message “Together it is possible..”
Yours in Rotary,
Alexandra Rotary Club”
To reciprocate the Toast our Rotaract Club toasted the Rotary Club of Alexandra at our next Club Meeting.
Our Club’s effort to support the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family was met with much enthusiasm by all our Rotaractors, our friends and the general public.
Through our mini marathon of December Christmas Bazaars and the sale of our 2012 Rotaract Calendar not only did we manage to raise awareness about the Association’s programmes and initiatives but we also managed to raise over 2000 euros as net proceeds in order to purchase some much needed household goods for the Shelter.
Fortunately after having bought all items on the Association’s “wish list” there was a remaining sum of 600 euros.
On 28th January 2012 a team of our Rotaractors went over to the Associations offices to drop off our ‘gifts’, the remainder of the 2012 Calendars (to be sold or given at the Association’s discretion) and of course the amount of 600 euros all of which were handed over to the Association’s Programme Officer, Mr Marios Nikolaou.
He thanked our Club warmly for showing such keen interest in the Association’s work and for our Club’s efforts to support them and wished us all the very best in our next endeavours.
Our Rotaractors reciprocated the wishes and assured Mr Nikolaou that our Club will stand close to the Association for any further assistance in the future.
We kindly ask you to spare a few minutes of your time by clicking on the link below to find out more about the Association and their efforts.
On Thursday 12th January 2012 our Rotaractors and friends got together at Fratelli Bar & Restaurant to celebrate the New Year.
This celebration was held with the traditional cutting of a Vasilopita. A tradition associated with the blessing of the house (or in our case RAC Nicosia) and the blessing of good luck for the new year to a lucky person, in whose piece, the hidden coin is found.
Members and friends alike, each enjoyed a piece of the delicious Vasilopita cake. As fate would have it the hidden coin was found in the piece cut for our Club leaving us with the hope that our endeavours as a Club this year would also be accompanied with luck !
Our partying at Fratelli continued…and the general merriment was not only attributed to the excellent wine served by Fratelli’s staff but also to the rewarding feeling of pride for the work done in 2011 and our enthusiasm for things to come in 2012.
This joyous occasion, in the presence of our Club’s members and friends, was the perfect opportunity to welcome our Club’s first new member for 2012.
In the pinning ceremony held, Anna Maria Leotsakou was made the Club’s newest member as a reward for her enthusiasm and contributions to our Club.
We warmheartedly welcome Anna Maria to the Club and the Rotary family !!

Dear Rotaractors, friends and visitors,
A few hours before the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012, I have the pleasure of announcing the launch of the very first issue of our Club’s Newsletter (or NewstRACker)!
I encourage everyone to click on the link below and read about our past projects, events and activities. After all the joy is in the journey and not the destination.
The amount of work put in by our Club’s Rotaractors these past three months is commendable and I take this opportunity to thank everyone for contributing their good spirit, their time and their efforts in making all our ideas a reality. It is truly one of the most rewarding periods to be part of this team.
My biggest hope is that by reading NewstRACker you will re-discover Rotaract Club of Nicosia and come closer to the amazing people who are part of it.
RAC Nicosia NewstRACker
On behalf of Rotaract Club of Nicosia I wish you all the very best for the New Year!!
President 2011 -2012
Rotaract Club of Nicosia
As we came to the end of a fruitful calendar year for our Club it was an opportunity to celebrate not only the season spirit but our achievements as a Club.
It was with great joy that all our Rotaractors, our friends and our guests gathered for our Club’s Christmas Dinner on Thursday 15th of December at Mondo Prive. We were especially glad to see our Rotarians, Yioula Papakyriacou, our District AG Maria Christopoulou our VDRR Vural Vural, as well as our past Rotaract President and current Rotarian Louis Thoma join us in what our Club is hoping will become an Annual Christmas Dinner.
Taking the opportunity of this occasion we held a pinning ceremony to welcome 3 new members to our Club as a reward for their selfless contributions to our Club activities and their enthusiasm.
The announcement of their names was met with a long applause by all, as each one stepped up to receive their pin by one of our distinguished guests.
We warmheartedly welcome Antonia Hadjicosta, Natalie Sepou and Evripidis Hadjinestoros to our Club and the Rotary family!

Rotarcat Christmas Dinner Presentation
Dear Rotaractors and guests
As you may remember,in early September our Club held a joint event in Protaras with our sponsoring Rotary Club of Nicosia.
This joint event (the BBQ Beach Party see post of Sept. 12th 2011) had been held in order to raise funds to support the work and in particular the Alkionides Nest in London. Moreover we hoped that through this event we would draw the spotlight on the Charity, their mission and their achievements but also bring the public’s attention to the difficulties of their endeavor.
Although attendance was lower than expected on the day of our BBQ Beach Party, we managed to raise over 600 euros on the day and a further 400 euros from donations made by Rotarians and others who were listening to our DJ broadcasting live over HiLights internet radio and his appeal for donations at the specified bank account.
On Thursday, 15th of December 2011, Mrs Georgia Polyviou, President of the Alkionides Charity accepted a cheque for 1000 Euros by Mrs Katerina Konnaris, President of the Rotary Club of Nicosia and myself representing our Rotaract Club.
Mrs Polyviou thanked us all for our contribution to the Charity and our commitment in assisting their cause and concluded by wishing us all the best in our future activites and events.
I reciprocated the wishes with a pledge that our Club will in the future organise another event in support of their cause with even greater success.
As part of that pledge I would like to ask you to spare 2 minutes of your time to click on the link belowand read more on the Alkionides Charity…
Best Rotaract regards
Dear Rotaractors, Friends and Visitors
As you are aware our Club had set the goals of raising funds and awareness in support of the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family through a mini-marathon of Christmas Bazaars (held on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December).
Our Club’s Rotaractors initially displayed their hidden (or not so hidden for some) artistic and culinary talents in preparation for our Bazaars, making an envious selection of cakes, cookies, brownies and muffins but also handcrafted jewelry and Christmas ornaments.
Their talent in creating artistic and culinary delights was however far surpassed by their great season spirit, positive energy and of course excellent salesmanship on the days.
This could not but be reflected in the outcome of our efforts. Our Club’s Rotaractors managed to raise over 1000 Euros as net proceeds.
In this accomplishment a big Rotaract THANK YOU goes out not only to this amazing team of Rotaractors but also our family and friends for all their support.
Special thanks are extended also to the following for their kind donations on both days :
Coffee Direct & Coffee Time Cafe, Nicosia (for their flavorsome filtered coffee) &
Get Fresh, Nicosia(for their delicious hot chocolate)
…our efforts as a Club however continue as we try to raise awareness and funds for the Association through the sale of our 2012 Calendar.
more info on how to get your hands on a copy of the Calendar will be posted shortly…
